The world’s greatest jewelers: Boucheron

The history of the Boucheron brand began in 1858, when Frédéric Boucheron dared to depart from the family tradition – his ancestors had been creating a line of dressmakers for generations – and opened his first jewelry boutique in the Galerie de Valois in Paris. The extraordinary talent of young Frédéric and his passion for color, high-quality materials, and richness of composition quickly distinguished the designer’s jewelry creations, laying the foundation for a success that would span the next century and a half.

A young creator with a vision

Just as one sees the properties of a stone before it is cut and feels the brilliance of a jewel before it is shaped, Boucheron imagined French jewelry before it even existed. Always avant-garde and in search of modernity, in 1879 the jeweler inventedQuestion Mark, an exquisite necklace with emeralds and diamonds, resembling a peacock feather. The necklace became sensational due to its innovative ‘question mark’ shape, which wraps around the neck without the need for fastening, giving a woman freedom of movement and highlighting her natural beauty. It was one of many pioneering designs that were to be created in the master’s workshop.

The craftsmanship and innovative beauty of Frédéric’s jewelry were noticed and appreciated in France – in 1867 he won a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris, and a few years later he was honored with the French Legion of Honor for his unique jewelry designs.

Atelier on Place Vendôme

In 1893, Frédéric Boucheron was the first of the great contemporary jewelers to open a boutique on the famous Place Vendômeat number 26. Legend has it that he chose this location – where, incidentally, the Boucheron boutique still remains today – because it was the sunniest corner of the square. He believed that the diamonds in the display windows would sparkle and shine in daylight, attracting the attention of Parisians. The atelier immediately became a phenomenon.

An extraordinary order

The beauty and growing fame of Boucheron’s designs allowed the acquisition of new, exceptional clients. The jeweler received commissions from the British royal family, created royal insignia for Indian aristocracy and rulers of the Middle East; among others for Queen Farida of Egypt and Queen Rania of Jordan. Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh of Patiala in 1928 arrived at 26 Place Vendôme with an escort of attendants carrying six chests full of gemstones, among which were 7,571 diamonds and 1,432 emeralds of various carat weights. The ruler placed an extraordinary order: he requested numerous luxurious jewelry sets made using gemstones from his treasury. Completing the task took the jeweler many months. To this day, it remains the most outstanding jewelry order ever placed at Boucheron.

Watches

On par with jewelry, watches have always been an integral part of the creative concept of the Boucheron Master since the brand’s inception. The creator presented his first timepieces as early as 1859, introducing to the world a collection of delicately carved pocket watches. Almost 25 years later, in 1885, the first wristwatches appeared. Then, in 1947, the Master presented the model Reflet, a watch with a rectangular, fashionable case. Captivated by its beauty, Edith Piaf bought 21 of them! Later models, such as Carrée and Ronde, continued this distinctive rectangular design, associated with the brand among watch connoisseurs around the world.

Boucheron boutique locations

In 1898, Boucheron opened a store in Moscow, later moved to St. Petersburg in 1911; in 1903 a store in London and an office in New York. Subsequent openings took place in Japan in 1973, in Shanghai, in Dubai in 2005, and in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur in 2006.

Boucheron today

The descendants of Frédéric followed in the footsteps of the great jeweler and continued his jewelry vision. The master’s sons, as well as the sons of his sons, held ownership rights to the Boucheron brand until 1994, when the family business was sold to the Schweizerhall holding. This move aimed to change the company’s direction towards a more global approach. In 2000, Gucci Group, a leader in the luxury goods industry, acquired the Boucheron house from Schweizerhall. Since then, Boucheron has remained under Gucci’s guidance.
